I was now able to test Joyn for a few days and would like to give my little feedback here. Joyn has been available as a beta version since CeBIT. I have already written about Joyn several times because I think it is an interesting idea.
When it comes to the level of distribution, Joyn has to rank at the bottom. Of my contacts, only one person has also used Joyn so far.
Joyn is still beta, but I don’t think much will change in the final version…
Joyn offers advantages, for example, when it comes to data consumption. Everything that runs through Joyn, i.e. exchanging pictures, videos, etc., does not affect your included volume in the data plan. Furthermore, any type of files can be sent, e.g. PDF. I don’t know what the size limit is here.
It’s also great that you can use Joyn for video calls. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to test this myself yet.
Furthermore, Joyn will be pre-installed on all devices that you purchase from the respective provider (Telekom, Vodafone, O2).
Joyn’s interface is simple and simple, I would have liked something in the Android Holo design and especially with inverted colors. Say black as the background and white as the font color.
Since everything runs through German providers, the German data protection law also applies here and you can assume that your data is safe.
Now to the disadvantages, which come from my personal point of view. Everyone can form their own opinion. Firstly, you are totally provider dependent. I don’t yet know to what extent the app can also be used on other devices from other providers.
But the worst thing for me is the international connection. So I can’t officially install Joyn on my US smartphone with a US contract at the moment. As I said, officially…
For me, however, this is one of the most important considerations, as I travel abroad a lot and also want to stay in touch with my friends and colleagues there. Maybe it will also be offered by T-Mobile USA, but that doesn’t help me much since I’m with a different provider.
In itself, I have to say, Joyn is pretty much useless for me. The international perspective may not be interesting to others, but it is very important to me. As I said, this is my personal opinion on the subject. Everyone should see for themselves.
My favorites are still Whatsapp and ChatOn. I’ve even seen WhatsApp roaming tariffs in other countries, so WhatsApp can be used abroad, while roaming, at no additional cost. When it comes to roaming and data roaming, we in Germany are still far behind other countries. People are still being “ripped off” here, but that’s another topic….
